DISSECTING FEMININITY AND FEAR
Shakespeare in the Park
Season 3 of the Workshop Players’ theatre festival ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ is to be held on the 7th and 8th of April at the Viharamahadevi Open Air Theatre, and the main attraction is the production of Antony and Cleopatra directed by acclaimed theatre director Tracy Holsinger. The play is a part of a series of productions organized by the Workshop Players headed by Jerome de Silva, with the aim of entertaining and educating students and enthusiasts of Shakespeare. The main vision behind Shakespeare in the Park (following the tradition introduced by American theatre director and producer Joseph Papp in 1954) is to make the Bard’s plays readily available and accessible to general audiences in open-air theatres, parks, etc free-ofcharge.
The main cast include actors Piorina Fernando as Cleopatra, Andre Howson as Mark Antony, Chalana Wjesuriya as Octavius Caesar, Haseeb Hassen as Pompey, Hidaayath Hazeer as Enobarbus, Celina Cramer as Charmian, Ayudhya Gajanayake as Iras, Kovindu de Seram as Maecenas, Biman Wimalaratne as Agrippa, Tasmin Anthonisz as Octavia and a supporting cast of more than 20 actors.
