REDEFINING CLASSICAL MUSIC
Artist Kavinchandran Alexander
The Sooriya Village at Skelton Road, Colombo 5 hosted internationally acclaimed artist Kavichandran Alexander from the 7th of March to the 3rd of April almost five decades since his departure from the country. Born in 1949, Kavichandran Alexander is a Sri Lankan artist who has engineered and produced multiple Grammy Award winning recordings including those of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, V.G. Jog, Padmabushan Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhat, Taj Mahal, Larry Coryell, James Newton, David Hidalgo, Jerry Douglas and Jon Hassell. He was also the first Sri Lankan to both produce and record major symphony orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic and the Hungarian National Philharmonic.
In 1984 Alexander began his own independent recording label Water Lily Acoustics in Santa Barbara, California in the USA in honour of his mother, Lily. Music recorded by Alexander’s label has been included in the musical scores of films such as ‘Dead Man Walking’, ‘Angel Eyes’, ‘Meet the Fockers’, ‘Two Days in the Valley’, ‘Primary Colors’, ‘One Hour Photo ‘and the Jon Bon Jovi documentary ‘The Circle’.
