CHERRY ON TOP
Lal Batman | Anna Laudel Bodrum
Influenced by religious motifs from Southeast Asian cultures such as Thai, Lal Batman’s color palette and symbolism depict a blend of nature and cultural elements. Her work clearly references acts of passion and liberation from societal norms, often represented by the naked bodies in her sculptures. These elements create a relatable yet estranging experience for the viewer. Each piece in this collection was created this year, reflecting Batman’s rapid and passionate creative process.
“Cherry on Top"; the latest exhibition by Lal Batman delves into themes of guilty pleasures, forbidden passions and hidden secrets, presenting a sense activating and thought-provoking collection of works which reflect Batman’s unique artistic vision and were specifically produced in the months leading up to the exhibition. The title “Cherry on Top” originates from the concept of indulgences that bring simultaneously joy and a hint of guilt, akin to the excessively sweet cocktail adornment found in a modest hotel bar.
Lal Batman unveils her sixth solo exhibition amidst the sweltering heat of August, a season notorious for peeling away the facades put up by society to reveal our raw desires and unfiltered emotions. In this exhibition, Lal Batman presents a series of colorful, voluptuous sculptures and intricately detailed oil paintings. Her previous work, which focused on childhood nightmares and dreamscapes, has given way to this new exploration of fantasies, desires, and wishful thinking.
Driven by intense passion, Batman channels her emotions and reflections into clay and oils, mirroring a relentless pursuit of satisfaction—a pursuit that perpetually remains and is defined by the intrinsic impossibility to reach fulfilment. Through “Cherry on Top", Lal Batman encourages viewers to unearth their latent desires and embrace the veneers of glamour that obscure their deepest yearnings.
Lal Batman’s solo exhibition “Cherry on Top” will be on display at Anna Laudel Bodrum, ZAİ Yaşam, from August 1st to August 18th, 2024.
